AudioWhiz vs typing it yourself: how much time do you really save?
Transcribing an hour of audio by hand usually takes several hours. A numbers-based comparison with automatic transcription, proofreading included, and when doing it by hand still makes sense.
Interview, meeting, lecture, podcast: at some point you have to turn audio into text. The question is simple: type it yourself, or let an AI produce the first draft? Here are concrete orders of magnitude to help you decide.
How long does manual transcription take?
The rule of thumb among professional transcribers: expect about 4 hours of work for 1 hour of audio. That is an average, not a law: with poor sound quality, several speakers or technical vocabulary, it often climbs to 5 or 6 hours.
Why so long? You have to listen, pause, rewind for a sentence you misheard, type, then proofread. Even an excellent typist spends most of the time navigating the recording, not typing.
And with automatic transcription?
The AI listens to the recording for you. As an example, a 12-minute YouTube video was transcribed by AudioWhiz in about one minute, including fetching the sound. For a file you upload, there is no fetching: the wait is only the processing, far shorter than the length of the recording.
You still need to proofread: fix proper names, technical terms and difficult passages. Plan on roughly the length of the audio, sometimes less when the sound is clean (this is an estimate and depends heavily on recording quality).
The math for one hour of recording
- By hand: about 4 h.
- With AudioWhiz: a short wait, then about 1 h of proofreading at most.
That is a saving of roughly 3 hours out of 4 for every hour of audio. If you transcribe 5 hours of meetings a month, that is about fifteen hours back.
When doing it by hand is still the right call
- Very poor audio: noise, distant or overlapping voices. The AI will make many mistakes and proofreading gets long.
- Text that must be word-perfect: official minutes, legal quotations. In that case, always proofread the automatic text while listening to the audio.
- A recording of a few minutes: the gap is small, type it if you prefer.
In every other case, starting from an automatic first draft is clearly faster than starting from a blank page.
What you gain besides time
- Searchable text: Ctrl + F to find a sentence instead of listening again.
- A summary or key points generated from the text, depending on your plan.
- Several export formats (TXT, DOCX, PDF, SRT and VTT subtitles) with no reformatting.
